SCISSORS INFORMATION

Most experts agree that scissors were invented in ancient Egypt around 1500BC. They were probably what we would call shears (larger sized scissors) with the pivot joint at the far end. The cross bladed scissor like we see today were invented about 100 AD by the Romans.

Modern day scissors, made of hardened and polsihed cast steel were invented in 1761 by Robert Hinchliffe. He took such pride in his invention that he actually put a sign out proclaiming himself to the a 'fine scissor manufacturer'.

One of the most popular brand of scissors today is the Fiskar brand of scissors. Started in Sweden (now Finland) in 1649 in a small hamlet located between Helsinki and Turku. The name of the small hamelt was Fiskar, and thus the name.

Although Fiskar Scissors are very popular, so are Gingher Scissors.

Gingher has been recognized as the premier leader in the manufacturer of scissors for over 50 years.

They are extremely popular for home sewing, crafts and in all sorts of industrial applications too.

Their method of manufacturing includes a centuries old method of hot-dip forging their scissors and shears from high carbon cutlery steel.

They actually grind and polish each pair of scissors and shears by hand.

The final step of adjusting the tension, blades and points are also done by hand to ensure the highest quality possible.

In America, the Gingher brand is more widely used in the fiber and textile industries than any other brand.

The Leah Ginger scissors are very popular as dressmaker shears or scissors. These are larger than their sister model the Emma Gingher Scissors.

Their smaller line of embroidery scissors is their Emma Gingher Scissors.

Of course, Fiskar Scissors are popular too and are definitely less expensive than the Gingher line of scissors. The Fiskar scissor line also has more models to choose from too.

Gaining in popularity are the electric fabric scissors. These can be purchased as either corded or cordless. If you opt for the cordless, then don't forget to place them back in the charger between uses and be sure to follow the charging instructions for electric fabric scissors too.

As nice thing about electric fabric scissors is that the blades are replaceable. That means you don't have to wait until the 'scissor sharpener' shows up at your local fabric store. And if you have ever tried to sharpen scissors on your own, you know how difficult and what a hassle it is.

The replacement blades are easy to change and relatively inexpensive compared to paying for scissor sharpening.

Electric fabric scissors do take some getting used to though. Just be sure to go slow. Just because they can zip through fabric at an incredible pace does not mean you should actually do that.

Even some of the 'traditional tailors' are using electric scissors these days, but they always have their Gingher scissors ready (or maybe their Fiskar scissors too), just in case.

You have a lot of choices in fabric scissors. You can't go wrong with Gingher , or Fiskar scissors either. You might be pleasantly surprised with a pair of Electric fabric scissors too. Todays quality for all of them has never been higher.
