rayon fabric?
I’m trying to sew a simple dress, and I was planning on using some rayon fabric I have. I only know a bit about different types of fabrics, but I looked up rayon briefly and a bunch of sources noted that it isn’t very strong (especially when wet).
will this be a problem with my dress, or is it strong enough for clothes, and it’s only in other uses that strength is an issue? should I worry about buttons or other places where there will be tension on the fabric?
I think that it’s probably fine (because I know I’ve worn rayon clothes before), I just don’t want to rip or ruin anything!
thanks so much : )

Rayon is a great choice for a dress. It has great draping qualities, retains color better than cotton, and breaths like cotton. The new rayon’s iron like a dream. The older stuff of 30 years ago was miserable to iron. I have many rayon articles of clothing and they are great! They wear very well , you will get lots of use from your dress!
One note :it does drape exceptionally well. You may want to lightly interface a collar , or front area that has buttons and button holes.
It may crawl while you are sewing. Use paper under it so the feed dog teeth don’t snag and it will sew a lot better.
Do use the soft (lightweight) interfacing for collar and button front if doing that.
I avoid rayon and other synthetic fabrics as much as possible using only cotton and wool.
the strength of the fabric is not an issue. This is made for dressmaking adventures. Just be sure to get the washing and drying instructions that were on the end of the bolt of fabric and follow them.
Happy sewing!!
