Can you embroider neatly on a 50 poly/50 rayon fabric?

By raysmithtx · Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Is this a good fabric for embroidering? I am trying to decide which kind of fabric to use to make my kids some personalized pillows. I found one that is 50 poly/50 rayon linen look fabric. Thanks for you help!
I am doing machine embroidery and am not sure which fabric to pick to make my children’s pillows with. I want to make 2 each, on that can be used and one that is decor that won’t be used. Thanks so much for all your help!

I’ve never tried it on that fabric but I highly doubt it, because that mix is what is known as “stretch” fabric. You could ask for a sample and try it out.

Rayon is junk.

You can embroider on anything; but some fabrics are a lot easier than others. It all depends on what you are able to do.

If a fabric has stretch, that is more problematic. If you are using floss on something that will shrink, that is not good either. You must choose the right kind of embroidery thread for the fabric you are working with. You must use the right stitches for best results. You must be sure the dyes are not going to run or fade. Will the pillows be used/washed a lot?

Try a small sample, and use it as you would the final item. How does it hold up? Then decide.

you’re definitely going to need to use a adhesive stabilizer because that fabric has “stretch” to it. It’s not an easy fabric to work with but it can be done!

The blend should not matter – stabilizer choice and the density of the design does.

I do not like Sticky Back – it gums the needles and breaks the thread.

I do like to use a temporary spray adhesive (see Sulky) to help anchor the fabric to the stabilizer – no gumming and the adhesive will dissipate, or you can wash it out.

Pre wash and dry the fabric before embroidering.

Buy extra so you can test the design and stabilizer.

One layer of light weight tear-away may be enough. It not, use two layers.
