Decorator Fabrics
We all know there are lots and lots of places where you can buy just any old fabrics. The problem arises when you decide you would like to have something unique. Then the number of places you can shop for decorator fabrics really drops.
There are some names that carry a very specific look, that’s why people tend to look for decorator fabric. They notice a particular line of fabric and then notice that just about every piece in the line carries a similar look. The look can be anything from bold to subtle to muted colors. Patterns are very popular because a lot of decorators use similar patterns within all the fabric in their line.
Decorator fabrics are available in just about any type of fabric imaginable and for just about any project you have in mind. Want to have some furniture re-upholstered to match, you can do that. Want to buy some tulle for a big party, you can do that too. Do not limit yourself when it comes to shopping for fabrics.
When shopping for fabric there are a few things you should watch for. The first is the width of the fabric. Be sure the fabric is wide enough so you will not have really visible seams. Most patterns will show the minimum length of the fabric you need for the project. On another note, if the fabric is a lot wider than the recommended length, then you will most likely have a lot of waste, which will drive the overall cost higher.
Another thing is the weight of the material. Be sure the material is heavy enough for the task you have at hand. A really nice looking but too thin material used will inevitably not give you the look you want it certainly will not stand up to normal wear and tear.
You should also look for the accessories and the tools (scissors, sewing machines, sergers, etc) at the same time you are looking for the decorator fabrics. This is especially important for the accessories. If you find that fantastic fabric and you can’t find the fabric trim to match it then you may have to just move on. People are almost always disappointed when they ’settle’ when it comes to buying the accent trim pieces to match their fabrics. If you aren’t in love with the trim and the fabric, you will most likely not be in love with the finished product either.
Take your time when looking for decorator fabrics. There are lots and lots of different looks you can achieve so taking a little longer in the ‘research’ phase will pay off with the perfect look in the end.
